the old girl
More and more I find myself talking to my ten year old Ford Escort like Humphrey Bogart spoke to the African Queen.
For the last few years we’ve taken to calling her “Betty,” as my fabulous friends Robert and Mark call every Ford a “Betty.” Here’s hoping the old girl doesn’t torpedo a BMW on the way home some night, still fighting the fight.

soundtrack to my decade
Earlier this decade, when I fancied myself much more avant garde than I do today, I would have gone along eagerly to say that Radiohead’s Kid A was the greatest record of the decade. I knew it. You didn’t. It was my job to make you see its brilliance. There was no room for opinion. I had the inside track.
Ten years out, I can’t say that I don’t still admire Kid A. But life...

Leaving work I turned the radio in my aging Ford Escort on, to be confronted by the strange new age program the NPR station runs at night before they switch over to BBC world at midnight. Living in the radio market that I do my options are quite limited, but I try to manage.
